Posted on Tue, 9 Dec 2014
Question: i have had bowel problems of not moving them for 8 to 10 days. the are soft and will have excruciating abdominal pain, vomiting and almost passing out. i got to the point of taking up to three different laxatives a day with almost no changes. i have seen two internists and two GI specialist with Amitiza and Linzess. Both of those have caused edema in eyes, legs and feet and no change in the 8 to 10 day movement. CT scan show no intestinal abnormalities, but shows a 6 cm cyst by my kidney. Colonoscopy
,show Diverticulli, but no other abnormalities. All the pain in my Abdomen (6-8) on pain left of umbilicus. Before BM at 8-10 days,I feel like my whole abdominal intestines have fallen and have terrible back pain. All these symptoms keep increasing plus now feel burning, though out my intestines and stomach, and occurring more and more but am not receiving much help. Is there anything else I can do or go to get help. Hx, Had an appendix out at 16 and vaginal Hysterectomy at 37, I am now 80yrs old and was active and self sufficient. I feel at my wits end and find these symptoms causing me to be unable to function as I have been.

Brief Answer:
Advised Senna&Clean prep to use...

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

1. Constipation (no bowel movements for 10 days) might be related to your age. Bowel movements will be slower at your age, thus, constipation is commonly occurring.

2. Apart all medications you are currently taking to ease bowel movement (bm), I recommend to add Senna tea or supplement.

Clean prep (preparations used to clean bowels before colonoscopy) are also recommended. You can take every 2 days.

3. Diverticuli can also aggravate constipation problems. It is good that there is no sign for inflammation/infection (diverticulitis).

4. I also advise to use antispasmodic drugs (buscopan, spasmex, etc.) with caution as they will aggravate constipation.

Mephenamic acid can be of help to ease pain and cramps.

5. I also advise to increase water consumption and try to walk or move around to ease your bowel movements.

Hope it helped!

This is the about the same answers received from my GI Doctors. All but the antispasmodic drugs have either been tried or not stopped the progression. Perhaps I should have clarified that up until two and a half years ago I moved my bowels within my normal without pain and were the same number of times per week. Two and a half years ago is when this problem started. First year, two or three episodes. Second year worked up to every other month. his past six months has been every 8 to 10 days. The last one month or two have had excruciating back pain and feeling that everything in my abdomen has prolapsed and the pain is way up to 7-9. My stool is not hard. It is soft. The CT Scan is done in a lying down position. Is it possible that if a flat plat done standing would show a prolapse or a bulging portion of the bowel better than a CT Scan?

Brief Answer:
Neuropathy/endometrosis to rule out...

Detailed Answer:
Hi back,

Thank you for your follow up queries.

From what you are reporting, all your problems make me think over possible neuropathy. I need to know if you have checked your blood sugar levels or if you ever been diagnosed with diabetes?

Next, endometrosis is another possible condition associated with constipation and abdominal pain. You are reporting to have run ct-scan, can you send a copy of the report so I can analyze it myself?

Thank you!
Dr.Klerida
