What Causes Abdominal Pain On Left Side?

default
Posted on Fri, 23 May 2014
Question: My 72 year old mother has had a stomach issue since last Friday. She has a pain in the lower left side of her stomach. It comes and goes. She has not been able to keep anything in; everything results in diarrhea. She has no appetite, though she is drinking fluids. She only has one kidney; her right one was removed almost eighth years ago because she had renal cancer. She has called her doctor twice, but he has chalked this up to a stomach flu both times.

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for your query and concern fr your Mother.

Gone through the Medical history of Renal Ca and Surgery 8 years ago, Off the medicines for Diabetes due to loosing weight, and the present history of abdominal pain on left side and Doctor's opinion.

I would like to know if her blood sugar at the moment is normal or not.

The pain on the left lower side of abdomen usually comes in case of colitis ( large bowel) Comes and goes means this is ''spasmodic''. Taking orally leads to diarrhea. And she is drinking fluids ( I hope she has no vomiting and fever).

As per the clinical picture you have presented this is colitis, meaning inflammation of the last part of the large bowel.

I think your Mother needs a proper treatment for this in the form of an antibiotic, metronidazole and anti-spasmodic along with Probiotics. She needs to be checked clinically by a Doctor to see for the vitals ( pulse, Blood Pressure, signs of dehydration( I would not like dehydration in a patient who has only one kidney), to undergo investigation if required on clinical examination of the routine blood, urine, stool, serum electrolytes and blood sugar, urea and creatinine in particular. All these are necessary considering the history of single kidney , history of diabetes (in which blood sugar can alter- rise due to infection), Her age.

Please have a second opinion of another Doctor, discuss with him/her the points I mentioned, get a clinical examination, investigations and prescription based treatment as per the opinion.

Wishing your Mother an early and uneventful recovery.
Please feel free to ask more if you need further information or clarification.
