Question: My son is 14 years old. and has cerebral palsy. He has had abdominal pains and been throwing up for the last month. He has been taking movicol ( one to two sachets per day) for the last week and a half to regulate his bowel movement. But there has been no relief from the abdominal pain and still continues to throw up.
Brief Answer:
Pain abdomen is probably due to constipation.
Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXX
Thanks for writing to HCM
Pain abdomen of your son is most probably due to chronic constipation.
However other causes should be ruled out by clinical examination and investigations.
Ultrasound of abdomen and X-ray abdomen(in erect posture) should be done to screen the other possible causes.
Chronic constipation is common problem in such child due to neurological impairment.
You are rightly giving movicol. It will help in softening stool.Besides this he should be encouraged to take fibrous food and take plenty of liquid.
Proper treatment is possible after confirmation of cause. You can consult your surgeon.
Get well soon.
