Brief Answer:
Pain in the colon has many causes to think of.

Detailed Answer:
Welcome to HCM

I appreciate your concern for the pain arising from the colon.
By the way are you sure that the pain is of colonic origin, on which side?

Do you have any associated constipation?
Any recent change in the bowel habits?
For how long you have been suffering from this problem, is it more during the process of defecation?

If you were my patient I would have examined you properly than the per rectum examination could have been done to rule out the hemorrhoids, polyps, anal fissures, or any other inflammatory conditions.

Sometimes urge to defecate occurs even with the empty rectum, this could be due to painful spam of the anal sphincter.

Since you are 57 yrs of age, I would have asked for endoscopic examination of your colon to rule out polyps, any tumor, or inflammatory conditions like ulcerative colitis or crohn's disease.

I hope I have explained the possibilities of the causes.

If you are convinced, then get examined by a surgeon for proper assessment and treatment.
Take care.
Wishing best of your health.
