What Causes Abnormal HIV Test Result Despite Getting Negative Result When Tested Again?

Question: Hello so my question is as follows.... I had a rapid hiv test about 3 weeks ago it came out negative. My female partner got tested on the 17 of nevember through kaiser and then again on the 28 of December via rapid hiv 4th gen, result was negative again. I decided to get a routine checkup for kaiser on the 4th of January and all my test came back negative except for the hiv which according to my doctor was abnormal and had to be re examined this was communicated to me on the 11th, that very day I was so freaked out I went to the aids foundation and got another rapid test 4th gen and it turned out negative so being that it's two negatives what gives? Is it a lab error or something else? I have had the same partner for the last 3.5 months and she was tested before hand also I just want some piece of mind.. thank you

Hi and welcome.
I am not sure what did your doctor think when he stated that this was abnromal test, but if you have two negative tests more than 4 weeks after possible exposure, then you dont have to be worried at all since tests are accurate and negative findings rules out possible infection. Maybe this abnormal findings was just inappropriate sample or technical issue there was some other misunderstanding. Wish you good health. Regards

Thank you so much I am still waiting for the results from kaiser but find it very odd that I took test before and after my kaiser test and they were both negative.. it's been a rough month and haven't been able to sleep much and feel anxiety and stress over this issue. With that said your medical opinion is that hiv is not my problem right?

hi

Detailed Answer:
Well, if your both partner tests were negative, and your rapid test as well then you could not contract a HIV infection. Some other STDs are possible, but HIV certainly not.
