What Causes Abnormal Feeling In Head In An Anxiety Disorder Patient?

Question: I have anxiety disorder and possibly ocular migraines without the headache. I think I have something called disconnect. My head feels weird at times, like I'm part of a dream. sometimes the episodes are really scary but disappear after a while. I had an MRI of my Brain and wore an EEG for 72 hours. Nothing abnormal showed up. The neurologist has me taking diazepam as needed but I haven't started it yet because I'm afraid it will make my disconnect worse. What do you think is wrong with me? Am I going crazy?

Thanks for writing to us. I can understand your concern.

Your MRI and EEG normal and neurologist has already given a diazepam. Your disconnect is likely symptom of anxiety.
Taking diazepam will surely help. If I were your treating doctor I recommend clonazepam. If you improve with diazepam, it is confirmed that it is anxiety and nothing serious to worry. Do not hesitate to take the drug; it will not worsen your problem.

Other possibility is fluctuation in blood pressure. If your blood pressure is not controlled with current medications, it can cause such weird feelings in head. It can also be due to acute fall in blood pressure (postural hypotension).

Your blood pressure should be checked regularly in supine and standing position to rule out this cause.

I was given clonazepam but it didn't last in my system long. It would only give me relief for about an hour then the disconnect would come back.

Sorry for delayed response. Clonazepam is overall long acting drug. After taking it regularly for a week it reaches to steady state and its half life reaches to more 30 hours. So you need to take it regularly as prescribed by doctor preferably in three times a day dose for at least 1 week and that will surely help you to control your anxiety for whole day.

Can this disconnect lead to something more serious...I'm really afraid

I'm afraid to take the clonazepam because of the side effects. I don't get them from Diazepam. Will it help my derealization/disconnect if I take diazepam instead?
