What Causes Abnormal Heart Beats Along With Weight Loss?
Question: I have a resting heart rate that goes into the 50 ' s mostly at night. If I go to watch TV in the evening and sit on the couch my heart rate slows down to the low to mid 50 ' s . I have lost a lot of weight over the past 10 months from 295 LBS down to 220 Lbs. However I do not exercise very much. Is this normal. I'm worried because it feels so slow. Sometimes when I get up from the couch I'll feel 5 or 6 slow hard heart beats until it speeds up during movement. Usually with any movement my heart rate speeds up accordingly.
Brief Answer:
Bradycardia and ectopics, better to investigate
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Welcome to HCM and thanks for your query.
I understand your concern.
The resting heart rate can be normal in a person who exercises well.
The strong thumbs that you feel are probably abnormal beats (ectopic ).
To lose weight without diet and exercise is also not very common normally.
It is advisable to see a doctor and have appropriate investigations to sort things out.
I shall be happy to answer any further queries.
Take care.

Hi Doctor. I have had a whole cardiac work up including holter monitors, echo, ECG, and stress test. All were normal. The holter showed sinus rythm with rare PACS. it showed my average heart rate was 71 and went as low as 41 bpm during sleep. My cardiologist says my heart is structurally normal and that I have a healthy heart. I have had all blood work done as well and results were normal. The weight loss was due to a big change in diet. I switched to eating plenty of raw fruits and vegetables, quinoa and chicken and fish. I made a dramatic dietary change over the last 10 months. I just get worried because my resting heart rate gets into the low 50 ' s when I lay on the couch. Doctor says it's my heart relaxing from working harder during the day. Does this sound right. I've seen 2 cardiologists
Brief Answer:

I am very glad to note that you are very health conscious. Congratulations at your healthy lifestyle and continue to lose weight and maintain it.
I agree with your cardiologists. There is absolutely no need to worry. I had read somewhere that the legendary tennis player Borg had heart rate of 35 per minute .
Wish you good health
