What Causes Abnormal Uterine Bleeding After Discontinuation Of Tamoxifen?
Question: Dear Doctor
Do I need a biopsy if I had some postmenstrual bleeding after stopping Tamoxifen which I took for 4 years due to breast cancer? I did ultrasounds and the result was that my ovaries are fine and also uterus and cervix are normal. The Endometrium measures 5mm in thickness is exactly the same it was in 2014 after my first postmenstrual bleeding. Not only, the last result on Sept. 30 - 2015 show that a little cyst I had in one of the ovaries has gone away, so the result is, in fact, even better then the previous ultrasound I did in January 2014. What are the risks of actually having endometrial cancer in my situation because I am reluctant to doing all these tests.
Thank you
XXXX

Brief Answer:
Everything is normal
Detailed Answer:
Hello Mrs XXXX, thanks for trusting health care magic.
There is nothing to worry about as it is very common to have estrogen withdrawl bleeding after leaving tamoxifen.
Definitely there is increased risk of endometrial cancer after tamoxifen intake but since endometrial thickness is within normal limits and ovaries are fine so nothing active needs to be done.
But get yearly pap smear and transvaginal ultrasound till 3 years if possible for precaution.
All the best.
