What Causes Aching Pain In Upper Leg After Prostate Removal?

default
Posted on Mon, 9 Feb 2015
Question: Have aching pain in my upper left leg (rear thigh area) when laying down or in an easy chair, unable to sleep at night because of the pain. Pain is not bad ( or not noticeable) when I am up and walking around. Had my prostate removed December 10th of last month. I have no pain in my operation area, want to know why my leg is aching, worried about a blood clot or something. I am 66, a diabetic and have a a1c of 8.0

Brief Answer:
Check for muscle spasm or hip arthritis

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for asking.
I am Dr. XXXXXXX HM and I will be answering your query.
Based on your query, my opinion is as follows:
1. I think, by know you would have seen the area and there is no external injury.
2. Two things can be thought of
A. Radiating pain from the hip joint to the thigh.
B. Muscle spasm.
3. I do not think, its a blood clot as it would be more in front rather than back. Secondly, it would have been near surgery time, rather than so late. If it had formed, it would have got dislodged, and moved to lungs causing breathlessness.
4. Need to press the muscle, if painful, it could be spasm. Muscle spasm due to potassium deficiency common in diabetes. Check potassium levels.
5. If no muscle spasm, need to get X-ray of hip joint to look for arthritis. Take celecoxib painkillers for now.

Also try stretching and active exercises in sitting/sleeping position to strengthen muscle around joint. Take good amount of water to maintain adequate hydration and avoid muscle spasm.

Hope it helps.
Any further queries, happy to help again.
