What Causes Acute Pain In Ankles And Other Parts Of The Leg?
Question: Hello, my 4 year old son woke up crying with extreme pain in both of his ankles. This lasted about 30 minutes. He had complained of pain in the center of his chest and on the bottoms of both his feet earlier in the same evening. He's been complaining of other random pains in his legs, arms, and feet daily for about a week, but nothing this bad. Can you help? Thanks
Brief Answer:
Growth pains/angioedema/connective tissue problem
Detailed Answer:
Hi...I have gone through the history of your kid.
He has got a propensity for allergy and usually these kids have some amount of joint swelling and pains when there is an eruption of allergic symptoms. This is called angioedema and usually will settle with over the counter anti-allergics.
Other possibility is a a growth pain which occurs when the kid is growing taller which happens around this age.
very rarely with this amount of joint pains and history of allergy the other possibility which should be ruled out is a connective tissue disorder.
I suggest you consult your pediatrician with these tips.

Is it possible he could have arthritis? He's had a fluid filled cyst, like bakers cyst on the lower part of the back of his right knee for over 2 years now. It's a bit smaller than the size of a ping pong ball cut in half.
I just remembered he also complained of pain in his big toe several times over the last couple of weeks as well. Could that be gout?

Brief Answer:
Rule out rheumatoid arthritis
Detailed Answer:
Hi...with the fresh history your are giving, I definitely feel that he should be evaluated for connective tissue disorders most popularly known as rheumatoid arthritis in general public.
It is unlikely to be gout as it is extremely rare in this age group.
I suggest you consult your pediatrician and get the following test done - CBC/ ESR/ CRP/ ANA/ Uric acid/ Renal function test and liver function tests.
