What Causes Aggresive Behaviour When Suffering From Depression?

default
Posted on Sat, 5 Apr 2014
Question: My daughter suffers from depression. She was on vacation with her husband and his family, when she experienced a breakdown. She exhibited inappropriate behavior, screaming at people around her, locking herself in bathroom and sitting in bathtub fully clothed. Communication and talking to others is difficult to maintain, engaging her to present time resulted in screaming. Increased talking to herself and also screaming. Psychiatrist recommended hospitalization and that was unacceptable. My daughter was advised to stay with my husband and myself. Decrease stress, and supervised visits with husband. What do you think.? YYYY@YYYY

Brief Answer: Possible psychotic episode Detailed Answer: Greetings. Welcome to Healthcare Magic. Well after reading your query in detail it seems like she has developed psychotic episode since screaming at people without any reason, doing bizarre activities like sitting in bath tub with clothes on, talking to self, all of these symptoms are typical of psychosis which may be an individual episode or overlaying on an underlying depression. In my own practice i have come across patients having similar symptoms like your daughter's and in most cases such patients are not amenable to taking drugs or injectable forms of treatment thereby leaving us psychiatrists with no other choice but to admit the patient in an indoor psychiatry facility so that supervised treatment can be administered to the patient and once the patient recovers and become complaint to following the treatment plan then the patient can be shifted back to his / her home. So you see what your psychiatrist suggested was the right protocol that is usually followed across the globe and taking into account the psychotic episode that she is in, there is an utmost urgency to start her on an anti psychotic drug and a mood stabilizer and a tranquilizer, even use of an injectable form of these drugs shall also be looked into if the need arises, all of this cannot be done while the patient sits at home so hence admission into an indoor psychiatry facility makes sense and it is what that can make your daughter come out of this phase otherwise if the phase gets prolonged she may become XXXXXXX to herself as well as to others. I hope this brings perspective and gives you plan of action. I wish your daughter speedy recovery and i shall keep her in my prayers. I hope this answers your question.
