What Causes Altered Sense Of Taste Post Antibiotic Treatment For Strep Infection?

default
Posted on Sat, 31 Oct 2015
Question: I had a strep infection in my right leg in August and in the hospital, was given a lot of high powered antibiotics. I'm not sure it's related but probably since then, or in any case recently, food has tasted strange, sometimes salty, sometimes just not very tasty. Even white wine tastes peculiar to me. Any thoughts?

Brief Answer:
This is related to the antibiotics used at hospital stay!!!

Detailed Answer:
Dr. Hanif warmly Welcomes you!

Thanks for consulting at my virtual clinic. I have carefully worked through your case, and I can realize your health worries. Being your physician, I assure you not to worry as I will take care all of your medical concerns.

Probable Causes:-
You have got the side effects of the high potency antibiotics used in the hospital for infection.

Explanation:-
Some antibiotics have a clear effect on the mucosal linings and the taste buds. These are the unwanted and inevitable side effects. Your change of taste and sensitivity is due to the same issue.

Management:-
Take plenty of fluids, vegetables ,salads and fruits.
Use the mouthwash you bought for gargles 4times a day.
Apply Somogel (OR Oragel) on the inside of the mouth and rinse after 5minutes with tap water.
Take Surbex-Z for nutrients and getting better fast.
Citrucel dietary fiber supplement for better digestion and to get more of the nutrients absorbed from diet.
It is a time taking process, and soon you will get better.
Avoid smoking and alcohol at least for the time your taste buds get better and oral mucosa heals up.
Avoid spices and fried foods too.
Sensodyne toothpaste is a good toothpaste, but apply little to the brush to avoid irritation.
The main idea behind such managements is to remain away from oral mucosa irritating agents, and the primary irritant i.e antibiotics is already over.
