What Causes Alternating Constipation And Diarrhea With Upper Right Abdominal Pain?

Question: Over the past two years I have had a injured back. recently i have gone through a lot of change and stress. I do have really bad anxiety. Over the past few weeks my job has changed a lot and it has been very stressful. I have weeks of constipation and then I may have a few days of diarrhea or loose bowels. I have some discomfort in my upper right abdominal and down to my belly button area on right side. I have a small puffy area about 3 inches to the right of my belly button that is tender if pressed. My job requires constant heavy lifting and thats how i injured my back. I feel almost like i have a small hernia in that spot. After getting upset and stressed i have more pain in the abdominals and back area. I had bloodwork done recently and it was all fine. I had been told i have some costicochondritis in my right ribs from a doctor.
Ativan works great and lortab does for my back and such.
I noticed that lifting heavy makes the spot feel worst or leaning back kinda stretching my lower abs

Hi and thank you for asking!
I read your query and understood your concerns.
Based on the data you provided your symptoms (especially alteration between weeks of constipation and days of diarrhea) are typical for patients with irritable bowel syndrome.
The puffy area around belly button most likely are related to umbilical hernia which are very common in weigh lifting patients.
If you were my patients I would recommend to do the following examinations for a proper evaluation:
- Abdominal ultrasound
- Upper endoscopy
- Colonoscopy
Hope this will be of help!
Wish you health!

Hi back,
Yes unfortunately stress aggravates the symptoms of IBS.
This is why in such cases in my clinical practise I recommend to use anxiolytic drugs.
It helps to improve the symptoms by decreasing the stress.

Thanks doc, I feel much better today. I had a movement that had some green mucus in it and after that I have felt a lot of relief the rest of the day after a number of days of discomfort. Even the spot where I thought maybe a hernia could be feels better. I will close this review now.
