What Causes Amenorrhoea While On Nexplanon?

Posted on Fri, 8 Jul 2016
Question: I feel like I have been urinating a lot lately. I'm on the nexplanon implant and I've had it for about 7 months now. My period was very irregular and wouldn't stop until I started using sprintec, I finished sprintec maybe a month or two ago and I haven't had a period since, is there anything I should be worried about? My doctor told me I wouldn't get pregnant on this birth control so I don't know if me having to frequently urinate could be something to worry about.

Brief Answer:
UTI

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for the query to hcm,
Nexaplanon is a progesterone hormonal implant and valid for 3 years and any progesterone contraception generally causes irregular menstrual spotting for at least 3-5 months before the menses stop in most women, so this is absolutely normal to experience amenorrhoea. However , urinary symptoms are unlikely due to norplant but likely that you may have developed a urinary tract infection. Hence, you should get a urine culture test done to rule out any infection first.

Thank you! I have been urinating very frequently and my urine is clear in color. I saw something online about diabetes, which makes me a little nervous. Do you think that could be a possibility and I'm also having scary thoughts of possibly being pregnant, but I have no other symptoms just urinating very frequently. Like I said before my doctor assured me that I would not get pregnant with this birth control so I'm more concerned about diabetes now since I seem to be thirsty as well or perhaps it may just be dehydration? Thank you again.

Detailed Answer:
Diabetes generally includes 3 symptoms - polydipsia ( increased thirst), polyphagia ( increased appetite) and polyuria( increased frequency of urination). In absence of the other two symptoms and with no family history in first degree relatives , diabetes is unlikely and its more likely to be a UTI.
After nexplanon implant , contraception is achiever from the 15th day post implant once the regular release of progesterone establishes a desired concentration in blood which prevent s ovulation and hence pregnancy, provided its been implanted during your safe period. now as its been 7 months already, you are already protected, so pregnancy is likely.
