What Causes Ammonia Like Taste In Throat While Running?
Question: I am a runner. When I run in the morning I can often taste something oily ammonia like in the back of my throat. I am in excellent health. What do you think is going on? I run in the country.
Brief Answer:
Mostly severe gastritis
Detailed Answer:
Hi
I am Dr Mittal
I have read your query
I think I am quite certain in fact that what you taste is the raw gastric acid
Severe gastritis may cause early morning excess acid.
When you run, the acid comes up into the mouth
And this may be causing you to feel that taste
A course of antacids may help
Like Pantoprazole
Best of luck

Dr Mittal, Thank you for your attention.
I have no pain, no acid taste at all. This is a basic taste, like ammonia - not acid.
I am a vegetarian and quite lean. I have no discomfort reclining.
I feel better when I go inside my house.
I should also mention that I live within 1 mile of 12 concentrated animal feeding operations of chickens. Each house has 25,000 birds. I only notice this problem in the very early morning or late evening when I run, when the odor is intense.
Could the factory farms be the problem?

Brief Answer:
need further information
Detailed Answer:
I dont think so
The factory farms, if the cause, would have caused the sense through the day.
The smell that you feel occurs twice a day
So the cause should be diurnal in nature
Do you have any other medical issues?
Any medicines you are on?
Any recent abnormal tests? especially sugars?

Dr. Mittal,
Odor containng hydrogen sulfide, ammonia and poultry dust which is ultra fine particulate matter are diurinal in nature. The rise and fall with the solar inversion. The odors are severe up to 1 mile away. N.C. has the greatest rate of increase of ammonia emmisions in the nation - 66% over 10 years. Childhood asthmas are worsened, poultry workers themselves have a 30% rate of chronic bronchitis, organ dust syndrome, asthma and other sinus and respiratory problems. Please see the CDC's excellent publication Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations and their Impact on Rural Communities.
Forgive me. No one likes to be "set up". My symtoms are real, the stench is real. It was worth my money to educate the physician community - even one by one.
