What Causes An Itchy Red Spot On The Thigh?
Question: woke up this am and notice a very large red area on my outer thigh area that appears to be from scratching the area in my sleep. Some areas are solid red in color and others you can see the lines where I've extracted my leg. I've seen this before but never this large. I no longer take and blood thinners (it's been over a year now) from previous blood clots.

How do I upload of photo located on my MacPro laptop
It's not itching right now, no burning sensation. I've noticed in the past if I over scratch an area on my legs, arms but they are very small areas. I can't figure out how to upload the picture from my laptop.

There should be an upload option on the right side of this page. You may use it to upload photo. Alternatively you can mail it to YYYY@YYYY with subject as "Attn Dr. Papaqako".
What you are describing seems like dermographism, which is the hyper reaction of the skin due to scratching. In general, just applying a mild steroid cream would be helpful, like Hydrocortisone 1% or Triamcinolone.
But I want to rule out herpes zoster as well, that's why I wanted to have a look at it to be sure.

I saw it carefully and it looks indeed like dermatographism, called differently physical urticaria.
Simple dermographism that is not itchy requires no therapy, and treatment involves avoidance of inciting triggers.
If the skin appears dry, emollients (such as hydrated petrolatum applied daily immediately after bathing), can be helpful.
If you are itchy you can take an antihistamine like Cetirizine or Loratadine in a day.
