What Causes Anemia, Dizziness And Acid Reflux Post A Roux-en-Y Surgery?

default
Posted on Mon, 14 Mar 2016
Question: I had the roux en y surgery about 5 years ago. Have developed anemia but currently all levels normal. Just finished my last iron sucrose infusion 3 weeks ago. For the past 3 days I will get dizzy throughout the day and I can't seem to get rid of an onion taste in my mouth. I also do not eat onions. My acid reflux is also increasing while on medication, happens if I have not eaten in a while or even if I drink water. Had an EGD and had erosion at the base of my new stomach. Currently miserable.

Brief Answer:
unfortunately you are having a common complication of Roux surgery

Detailed Answer:
Welcome to HCM: Please note that this happens a lot to many after this surgery, many will call it a failure of the surgery and a revision is normally needed, at this juncture, the onion taste I bet is acid reflux/stomach contents. I think you need your labs drawn again and make sure that your B12 is normal and is your folate, level, note also that Fe2+ may be replaced but you could still be anemic, I hope this gives you a much needed direction. You unfortunately sound like you need to have a revision of your prior surgery.

Thank you for the information. What do you mean by a revision of my prior surgery?

Brief Answer:
you are welcome.

Detailed Answer:
revision means that you may need the current surgery to be redone or "repaired" by "fixing" the worsening symptoms.

The base of your stomach that has worse symptoms may need to be addressed, the surgeons in consultation with your GI doctor can go over options moving forward.

Let me know if there are any more queries regarding.
