What Causes Anxiety, Dizziness, Heartburn, Headaches And Irregular Menstruation When Diagnosed With Prolactinoma?

Posted on Fri, 21 Apr 2017
Question: I was diagnosed with a prolactinoma in 2007. After treatment I gave birth in 2008. I began treatment again in 2010 and gave birth in 2011. At the end of 2014 I was advised to start the contraceptive pill due to low bone density but due to continuing side effects came off in March 2015. I was put onto bromocriptine then cabergoline but the side effects worsened so was taken off everything. I was getting anxiety attacks, heart palps, dizzy spells, heartburn, headaches & nausea with irregular periods. During that time I had numerous blood tests as well as 3 ecg's and a holter monitor test. In early 2016 I was referred to a cardiologist who did a stress test and echo - both of which came back as normal. In late 2016 I was put on low dose progesterone and at the end of 2016 was changed to a progesterone trochue. I have had 1 period in the last 6 months which doesn't bother me, but I am still getting these funny turns where it feels like I am going to pass out. I am only 36 years old and it is really upsetting not knowing when I am going to have these funny turns. Is this a part of menopause or something else and is there anything I can do about it?

Brief Answer:
Can be due to many causes.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for trusting us with your health concern.
There are many causes for such feeling.

Common ones are high blood pressure, low blood pressure, cervical spondylitis, anemia, and low blood sugar, use of sedatives, tranquilizers and antidepressants.
Levels of calcium vitamin D and B12 also need to be checked.
Uncommon reasons can be due to brain reasons or arrhythmias and cardiomyopathies.

My purpose of telling you the causes is so that you don't take your symptoms lightly and consult your doctor and get yourself physically examined along with various investigations.
Few measures that can help include : -

1. Follow few specific techniques that will help to decrease the pooling of blood in your legs. These may include foot exercises, wearing elastic stockings or tensing your leg muscles when standing and increasing salt in your diet if you don't have high blood pressure.

2. Avoid prolonged standing — especially in hot, crowded places — and drink plenty of fluids.

Please feel free to discuss further. I will be glad to answer the follow up queries that you have.
Wishing you good health.
