Brief Answer:
Good question.

Detailed Answer:
Someone is normal. They have an addiction. They no longer take the drug. There are some behavior changes that persist a really long time after. What's going on with that.
Good question.
With amphetamine and some other stimulants also alcohol there is plain brain damage. This gets somewhat better over years. This is not exactly the case with all other addictions BUT, there is REWIRING of the brain. I'm a fat person. Ok, currently I am 18% body fat run 5k's most days and am still losing weight BUT, the wiring of my brain is that of a fat person:
I don't have hunger. I get anxious and paranoid and attention seeking when a demanding slightly demented patient made me miss all my meals today (ok, I had one meal so I guess I am lying slightly too). My point is that addictions even common ones that you might have rewire how we respond to the world. This is not as easy as addiction treatment.
