What Causes Auditory Hallucinations?
Question: Hi My wife (aged around 48 years) of late started hearing words/conversations which we understand never took place. She is a healthy lady without any previous health ailments. The typicalconversation will be like someone around our building speaking against us and someone repeatedly telling some words/sentences. But I did not hear anybody speaking like that nor my daughter heard. Initially I thought my hearing capacity has come down but now I feel that is not the case.Is this some kind of mental disorder(say Schizophrenia like) or these kind of things normally occur for a lady who is reaching menopaus? Is it required to take her to a psychiatrist immediately?
Brief Answer:
She needs psychiatric consultation
Detailed Answer:
Hi, thanks for writing through HCM.
I have read your query and understood your concerns.
These symptoms are suggestive of some psychotic illness similar to schizophrenia in which person hears voices nobody else can hear and responds to that and starts believing the content of voices.
This has nothing to do with menopause. In my opinion you have to take her to psychiatrist. She will improve and be healthy with antipsychotic drugs.
Her symptoms are second/third person auditory hallucination and with secondary delusion.
Hope I have answered your query. If you have further query then I shall be happy to help.
Wish you good health.
