What Causes Aversion To Coca-Cola While Quitting Effexor And Trazodone Cold Turkey?

Question: Hello, I went cold turkey quitting taking my Effexor and Trazodone about 45 days ago. I'm still feeling a tad nauseous and it seems to have affected my appetite to a point where I crave say Sprite way more than Coke and I was a huge Coke drinker. The thought of a dark soda is not appealing. Thank you.

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

Coke (and most other dark sodas) have caffeine, and possibly your body is not wanting anything extra that is stimulating as it gets used to being off of the Effexor and Trazodone.

The withdrawal period should mostly be over, but people can have some lingering symptoms, especially if they were on higher doses, were on the meds for more than a few months, and if they tend to be sensitive to some meds.

In addition, if having taken them for anxiety or if there is any persistent or increased anxiety/stress once off of them, that can continue.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Hello Dr Berger-Durnbaugh,

That makes sense! Thank you. I was taking 150mg of Effexor and 20mg of Trazodone. I can't sleep now without the Trazodone and my anxiety is through the roof without the Effexor. I self admitted myself for suicidal thoughts in 2013 so I do have big issues.

My question is how can I get these meds without insurance? I am about to start a new job, but feel I need these meds back in my system ASAP.

Thank you!

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

Trazodone is generic and Effexor can now be purchased as generic venlafaxine - so the prices of the meds themselves may not be a problem. But I imagine the impasse is getting them prescribed without paying a lot to a clinic/doctor.

I see you are in XXXXXXX (it shows up on this page) so I looked up free or reduced clinics in Hennepin County. I don't know which ones might be closest to you. You can take a look at the list and then call the clinics to find out what they cost. Some may be free.

Sometimes a university hospital will take people on a sliding scale or low cost, but whether the ones near you do this I can't say.

When you restart the meds, you may need to start on a lower dose such as half the dose and work your way up after a couple or more weeks, so your body gets used to them again without side effects.

Hope I have answered your query.
