What Causes Back And Upper Abdominal Pain?
Three questions:
Do I need to see a GI? I had a normal colonoscopy in Feb. 2013.
My Dr. said the Pancreas thing was a congenital thing like my backwards aortic arch, and not the cause of my pain, is this true?
What can I do for the pain?
further info on bowel movement needed
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
1. Horrible pain on right back and upper abdomen are related to nephrolithiasis. Your WBC are elevated, indicative for any source of infection in your body.
Have you done any urine analysis recently? Was infection present there?
2. Pancreas divisum is a congenital finding and has nothing to do with your symptoms.
3. I advise to take Buscopan or papaverin for the pain. Finding and treating the right underlying problem is the final solution.
4. As bilateral nephrolithiasis was noted, I highly recommend to consult with nephrologist. Urine analysis and urine culture are advised to rule out UTI.
5. I want to know If you are also having:
- changes in bowel movements?
- changes in stool color?
- bloating? heartburn?
before deciding if you need to see a GI specialist for the moment or not.

I've had kidney stones for 15 years.
I'm not having bm's because of my clear liquid diet. But there were no changes in stool color, no bloating, no heartburn.
Yes,discuss further with another urologist...
Detailed Answer:
Hi back,
1. Although the stones are located in the kidneys, I need to know if these stones are movable. If yes, they can lacerate kidney mucosa causing the pain. If I was your caring doctor would advise to discuss it further with another urologist or nephrologist.
Urologist=specialist for urinary tract problems (surgical)
Nephrologist = specialist for urinary tract problems (clinician, non surgical)
2. I also advise to schedule another colonoscopy for this year to evaluate if any changes are present.
Hope it helped!
