What Causes Back Pain Along With Pain In Legs And Purple Discoloration Of Ankle?

Question: I have kyphosis (noted on a X-ray)
When I was a child the school nurse told my mother of her suspicions that I may have scoliosis.

My mom had no job, no college, or any health insurance.

To add to her woes she had 9....yes....9 children. Her utmost worry was housing and food.

All through my life I have suffered rom extreme back pain and all those idiot people tling me to stand up straight. My left leg is longer from the right, for I lean to the right.

I was diagnosed with ADD, for I couldn't sit still.....well.....if I stay in any position (laying, standing, sitting etc). I have extreme back pain.

I can't sleep for longer than 4 hours, I wake with back pain, after taking double keeping pills.

My back is hunching over more as each day passes.
YES....I have been to physical therapy........for years.....to strengthen my core, to make standing tall I reality.

I am immune to pain meds for this. (120 Percocet) a month. Doesn't even phase me, so I stopped taking them. To me......it's like YOU......taking a bayer 81mg aspirin for a extreme migraine.

I have extreme leg pain (bilaterally). I have had nerve conduction tests, vascular tests.....nothing.

I am off work for the second time in a year. On FMLA.....my feet.....ankles.....are too swollen to wear shoes.
My ankles and feet are bright blue and purple. Also....not a diabetic.

Could I have full blown scoliosis?
Is it causing my leg pain and my ankles to turn purple. It looks like someone took a baseball bat....and beat my ankles and feet.

I want to work.....I love my job.
I am 51 and a nurse aide in a big hospital in St. XXXXXXX on a oncology/medical floor.

But I am on my feet for 12 and 1/2 hours.......3 days a week.

My feet go numb and I fall a lot, because I trip on my own feet, high don't move sometimes.

Brief Answer:
Swollen feet not related to scoliosis.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thanks for using HCM.

I have read your query and understand your concerns.

Back pain with spreading of pain in legs could be related to scoliosis and its complications on the vertebral column.

Swollen and purple feet instead, are not a common sign of scoliosis; most common conditions that could cause swollen and purple feet include venous insufficiency of leg veins, infection, deep vein thrombosis, drugs side effects ( calcium channel blockers, antidepressants, NSAID drugs ), or more serious conditions such heart, liver and kidneys diseases.

So, in my opinion, swollen feet and back pain are two separate conditions.

Back and legs pain could be related to scoliosis, if there is evidence of nerves and spinal cord compression, a vertebral column MRI is the best imaging tool to evaluate this possibility.

If there is evidence of moderate to severe compression, decompressive surgery is a possible choice, besides conservative treatment.

Swollen feet causes should be evaluated further, regarding to conditions mentioned above.

I think, compressive stockings may help relieve swelling.

All these issues and further tests needed should be discussed with your primary care Doctor.

Hope you found the answer helpful.

Take care.

Sorry about the typos....I forgot to proofread in the wee hours of the morning. Being a graveyard girl, I am awake at night and sleep during the day.

I do have compression stockings, but so look hot here in St. XXXXXXX i almost pass out

I am + for
Calcium channel blocker (norvasc) along with ace inhibitor and beta blocker (atenolol and accupril)
ABC. ACE INHIBITOR, BETA BLOCKER, AND CALCIUM BLOCKER.
+ for antipressant (effexor)

I went to the vascular lab last year.
Don't laugh at my explanation of what they did....

Put iv with XXXXXXX in me.
Put 2 blood pressure cuffs on each leg
And
2 cuffs on each arm
Negative results......

I need, to ask M.D. to consider switching my norvasc to another drug.

Get a xray of my back (first step that my insurance requires before any ct or MRI)

Mention to him......not that I asked this site.....but mention the things you discussed.

He doesn't need to know I asked you, for I don't want him to get a attitude......it's a doctor thingy. No harm meant!

I also need to wear my stockings.....ugggghhhh

I have multiple issues, along with needing a cpap, only a year old. I feel scoliosis has effected my breathing. I also KNOW MY BOWELS have been effected. ONE BM A WEEK.

I know I need to start working on these issues.
But God needed 7 days to make this world.
I must be patient, and work on these issues one at a time.
They ARE not going to be corrected overnight.

BUT I MUST START ON THEM IMMEDIATELY, one issue at a time

Thank you XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
Swelling of feet probably side effect of drugs.

Detailed Answer:
Welcome back and thanks for further clarifications.

In this case, swelling of feet is most probably caused by drugs you use.

I agree with your opinion that these issues should be addressed separately and step by step.

It is true that time is needed, but I'm positive about possiblities to improve your condition.

Keep working and following up with your Doctor.

Best regards.
