What Causes Back Pain, Prostate And Urethral Pain When Diagnosed With Kidney Stone?

default
Posted on Thu, 20 Aug 2015
Question: I was diagnosed with a kidney stone 5 weeks ago. At this point I have not seen it pass. Last week I started having back pain again and went to the doctor. He did DRE and prescribed Flomax to help pass the stone. The back pain has subsided, but now I get a sharp pain in by prostate and urethra when I urinate or sit on a hard surface. Could this still be the kidney stone, or is it something else?

Possibilities explained sir

Detailed Answer:
Hello sir and welcome.

Thank you for writing to us.

I have gone through your query with diligence and would like you to know that I am here to help. I hope you know why flomax is actually prescribed, but if you do not then let me explain.

Flomax is prescribed to treat enlargement of the prostate gland. Your doctor may have noted age-related enlargement of your prostate gland. This enlarged prostate gland can put some amount of pressure on the urethra causing a reduced urinary flow (some amount of obstruction and narrowing), which in turn makes it difficult for the stone(s) also to pass out.

Flomax in turn helps to reduce this prostate enlargement by a small amount, in turn helping or promoting expulsion of the stone(s) from the urinary tract. Now that we have made that clear, the pain you could be experiencing could be either of the following:

+Possible small stones lodged in the narrowed part of the urethra, that in turn experiences some amount of pressure when you sit on it

+The prostate is being treated for enlargement making it sensitive (mildly); and when you sit on a hard surface a certain amount of pressure is applied onto the prostate causing the sharp pain

In either scenario, I would advise an ultrasound of the region to make sure there is no lodged stone there. If there is nothing lodged there, then there should be nothing serious to worry about, and your symptoms shall soon subside.

I hope you find my response helpful. Please feel free to write back to me for any further clarifications, I am always here to help.

Best wishes.
