Brief Answer:
Muscular pain.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
From description it seems you might be suffering Mechanical back pain.
It is a common medical problem. Mechanical back pain implies the source of pain is in the spine and/or its supporting structure. The surrounding muscles and ligaments may develop reactive spasm and pain.
The following measures will help with the pain
• Lie on a hard bed.
• Anti -inflammatory drugs in combination with an oral muscle relaxant with food will help relieve the pain.
• Correct your posture while sitting
• Avoid prolonged sitting
• Avoid strenuous activity & lifting heavy weights.
• Apply diclofenac gel on the affected area. Warm compresses will also help.

The most essential and long lasting remedy is exercises. There are certain back strengthening and isometric exercises that you must learn from a physiotherapist and perform them at home whenever possible.

You can start with swimming and mild aerobic exercises. These do help a lot in the back pain. Do adequate warming up before starting the exercises daily.
Taking calcium and vitamin D 3 supplements will also help in early recovery. You can get these prescribed from your orthopedician.

I hope this answers your query.

I reviewed your suggestions and note there are many of them which I am already doing on a reg. basis. My first two MRI's showed only a mild degen loss in the lower spine, but a Dexascan taken one month ago--five years later indicated a T score of -2.8 in the L-1 thro L-4. I have had not been real consistent in my calcium intake recently so I am now taking both calcium and other bone restoring supplements., along with D-3. I have been doing weight-bearing exercises for years.
No one has ever suggested Isometric exercises for my back before; I will follow that advice.
Would the bone density loss in the lumbar region cause generalized pain throughout my back?
(Voltaren was ineffective when I tried it many years ago.)

Brief Answer:
Yes. It can cause pain in whole back.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
The bone density loss can cause a back pain in the whole back due to compensatory muscle spasm of the paraspinal muscles. Increasing the tone of the muscles with regular exercise will help in decreasing the pain and will add to the flexibility of your spine.
Hope my answer is helpful.

Thank you once again for responding to my questions. It really answers why the pain used to be more localized in a tension spot between my shoulder blades which began 8-10 years ago, but has since decreased greatly, but more recently the generalized pain has become a problem.
I was listening to a CD yesterday in which the doctor was quoted as saying that taking calcium was NOT a good idea and had researched thousands of people who actually had weaker bones as a result of taking the supplement. He stated that the body quits making it on its own when we add supplemental calcium to our intake. This was a theory? fact? I had never heard before.
What is your experience with this supplement?
Thank you!

Answered by Dr. Dr. Praveen Tayal (2 hours later)
Brief Answer:
It is his own theory.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Our body cannot synthesize its own calcium. It has to be supplied in the diet. The supplemental calcium increases the availability of calcium to our body thus increasing the total calcium absorbed in the body. This absorbed calcium is then deposited in the bony matrix thus making the bones stronger.
Calcium supplements are routinely recommended to decrease the effect of osteoporosis and are helpful. Hope this clears your doubt.
