Posted on Tue, 15 Sep 2015
Question: I had a spinal tap which showed viral meningitis, but I'm concerned because about an hour before the procedure I was given 30 mg toradol iv and now I have back pain below the lp spot. I've read that it should not be sore etc 24 h later and now it's been 2 and 1/2 days. Am I paranoid or could toradol complicated things--- I.e , bleeding , hematoma, etc and should I not have been given an nsaid before an LP? Thanks

Hi
I am Dr Mittal.
I have read your message.
I think I can help you.
First , I am not sure about the source of the information.
It's known that backache and headache can occur for up to 7 days.
Also , I am sure if you tell your doctor pain killers can be given. We usually give them sos only. So just tell your doctor. I usually suggest paracetamol.
As for hematoma, your back will need to be examined by the concerned doctor to look for such changes.
I have tried to make it as simple as possible. I hope that the information contained in this message will be able to help you find the best solution for your problem. Best of luck. Dr Mittal.

What I meant was
1)should the dr NOT have given toradol BEFORE a lumbar puncture because it can cause bleeding? And...
2) might any back pain/ discomfort be related... I don't need to know what pain meds to take now. Is it normal to have back pain for up to 7 days from a spinal tap... I had read that this is not normally the case

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for your response.
Yes it's possible up to 7 days.
There is no doubts about it.
mostly it resolves in 2 days, but can happen upto 7 days.
As for whether there is a hematoma, only way to ensure that is by examining the back

As for why the tablet was given, I think only the doctor can tell you that.
Toradol is a very effective pain killer for headaches. I am assuming you must have had severe headache at the time.

The toradol was given IV and given for the headache, but you did not answer whether this is advisable to be given before an LP because of bleeding, etc. or is it OK?

Brief Answer:
Since you had severe headache, the medicine was needed.

Detailed Answer:
I have tried to explain exactly the same.
If you were in intense pain, the medicine was needed.
The fact that LP is needed must have been decided later.
So yes, it would be indicated.
Best of luck.
