Brief Answer:
Seems to be rhinitis.

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

I had gone through your question and understand your concerns that you are having trapping of smell. I would like to ask you few more details.

Are you on any medications (aspirin, alpha blocker- anti hypertensive) ?
Is there any sequence of sneezes followed by running nose ?

Kindly get back to me with the details.

Based on your clinical details, it appears to be rhinitis (drug induced) or allergic rhinitis or vasomotor rhinitis.

Rhinitis, can cause derangement of nasal cycle where smells get struck, even after removing the source.

I suggest you to re consult ent surgeon and give detailed history (drugs, vasomotor), get ent examination, blood tests (to differentiate from allergic to non allergic rhinitis), smell sensitivity tests (special tests for olfactory function). depending on the examination reports further treatment is required accordingly.

Hope this answers your question, if you have additional questions or follow up questions then please do not hesitate in writing to us. I will be happy to answer your questions.

Wishing you good health.

ENT doctor says I have no infection and no puss. Airways are not blocked. I've had this problem for several years. Could it be caused by a fungus in the nose? I use a saline wash but that doesn't help either. I will take your suggestion to my doctor. What can I do in the meantime?

Brief Answer:
continue same nasal spray.

Detailed Answer:

Hello again,

Thanks for considering my answer and for your follow up.

Surgeries, medications (otrivin, saline nasal drops) and systemic diseases like diabetes and hypertension also causes alteration in nasal cycle.

No, it is not a fungus. fungal polyp obstructs the nasal cavity and thereby causes decreased sensitivity to smell.

Mean time, continue nasal spray (FLUNISOLIDE).

Hope, I have answered your query.

Take care
