What Causes Biceps Tear With A History Of Rotator Cuff Tear?

default
Posted on Wed, 8 Jun 2016
Question: Had surgery for a-massive rotator cuff tear, from which I never fully recovered mainly in strength and external rotation. Two years later I tore my bicep on the same arm. Is there typically a correlation between rotator cuff tears and future bicep tears resulting from a bicep muscle trying to overcompensation for a weak and not fully functioning rotator cuff?

Brief Answer:
Biceps tear is not likely to be due to Rotator cuff tear.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query to HCM.

The overcompensation of biceps muscle due to a past Rotator cuff tear is likely to result in a slight hypertrophy of the muscle. This extra stress is not likely to cause a tear in the long term. A trauma or an injury must have precipitated the tear.

I hope this answers your query.

There was no trauma or injury to my bicep (there was however to my rotator cuff).

Brief Answer:
Can be due to weakened muscle due to some other reason.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.

If there was a tear of biceps without a trauma then your biceps must have been weakened due to inflammation or local steroid injection. Please try to understand that a Rotator cuff tear is not likely to cause a biceps tear.

Hope my answer is helpful.
