What Causes Black And White Appearence In Vision Of A Child?
Question: My six year old daughter told me that today everything appears to be black and white (she said, "Everything looks like the beginning of The Wizard of Oz"). I pointed out specific street signs (one red with white writing, for instance) and she said all of them were grey and white, with the trees and grass being nearly black. When she was within a couple feet of something she could tell me the color correctly, but as she moved further away from it, it would appear grey to her again. I am waiting to hear back from her optometrist, but we live in a small town with limited medical expertise so I wanted to explore other options as well. The nurse I spoke to at the optometrist office asked if it was happening in both eyes or just one, and because my daughter never specified, I'm guessing it was both eyes. She also asked if she was having headaches recently, and though it's not a constant complaint, I do believe she speaks of having headaches more often than I ever remember as a child.
Brief Answer:
needs urgent ER visit
Detailed Answer:
Hi
thanks for writing to.us.
You need to seek urgent.medical help for your child.
The reason I am saying this is because there can be a number of reasons for this symptom starting from mild migraine to severe conditions like optic neuritis.
Urgent don't delay. An ER physician would be able to help your child .
MRI and ophtalmoscopic may be needed to confirm severe conditions like optic neuritis.
Steroids may be given by your doctor for the same only after diagnosis is confirmed.
If migraine ,it can be easily treated with pills.
Wishing your child good recovery.
