It seems to be a gastrointestinal bleeding. It happens very commonly at old age if a person is prone to bleeds like already having a gastric or duodenal ulcer. When there is bleeding through gut the stomach acid reacts with the blood and causes the color change to become dark or black mixed with stools. If bleeding is from colon, rectum or anus it is fresh red colored.
You need to consult a Gastroenterologist for proper evaluation and treatment accordingly.
