What Causes Black Spot On Toe Of Left Foot?
Question: Sometime in the past two weeks, a black spot appeared on my little toe, left foot. I say that because two weeks ago, I changed the polish on my toes and it wasn't there. I pay very close attention to my skin because 10 years ago, I had a superficial spreading melanoma removed from my right arm. I visit my dermatologist every 6 months and was just there a month ago. I noticed this spot 5 days ago and have been looking at it every day since, hoping that it fades and that it's just a blood blister. There is no change. It is only about 1mm wide and just the slightest bit raised. I called my dermatologist yesterday, she's on vacation, back in the office on Monday. I will be seeing her on Monday, I'm sure, given my history (and my family history). I took a pretty good picture of the spot with my iPhone and if you zoom, there's lots of detail. I suspect this is a melanoma.

Looking at the picture I suspect two possibilities - Melanoma or a subcutaneous haematoma.
Though with history first of all Melanoma needs to be ruled out.
Subcutaneous small bleed within tissue under the skin can also look like this.
I would suggest two things.
Wait and watch approach - Take serial photographs of this lesion every week with a measuring scale placed adjacent to it. The behaviour of lesion over a period can give doctor a idea what it is.
Aggressive approach - other suggestion is get a excision biopsy done, though it might turn out precautionary.Even this step of removing it and then determining what it is, can be undertaken in view of previous history.Since lesion is small , it will be a day care procedure.

Thank-you. Wonderful idea to take serial photos with a ruler. I will do that. I'm guessing my dermatologist will agree with you and do a biopsy.
