What Causes Blackened And Extremely Dry Skin On Ankles?
Question: Hi
my mother 61..
has type 2 diabetes, ckd stg. 3..
anemia.. arthritis..gout ( frm the diabetes )
while in the hospitial looking at her sinuses , I noticed her ankles were like brown/black
& extremely dry & the brown spots, light brown were slowly coming up her legs.
what is this? is it due to poor diet, anemia.
I know the swelling , off & on, comes from the ckd..but the discoloration & dry skin
is that due to her diet or anemia??

Brief Answer:
Diabetes/CKD skin changes
Detailed Answer:
Good day,
Noted your concern.
The spots in her leg is most likely the skin changes of peripheral neuropathy. These can come as brown or red dots or as hyper pigmented patches. The skin of these individuals with T2DM and CKD are very dry and fragile. Scratching can tear the skin and leave marks as well.
Anemia is common in CKD, however it is unlikely the cause here. You may take a picture and attach to this question if that is feasible. Because, direct visuualization can give a much better picture.

Brief Answer:
Diabetic neuropathy changes
Detailed Answer:
Good day,
Got the photos. This is typical diabetic neuropathy changes. The brownish patches are typical. I can also see that the skin is very dry in legs. You have to use a gentle moisturiser two to three times a day to keep the skin soft. Otherwise the skin wil easily break and cause infections. Apply after shower in downward fashion. Avoid strong massage.
Please do not worry much about the skin patches. If there is no pain or surrounding redness, do not worry. ( Type diabetic dermopathy in google images and you can see similar pictures).

What gentle moisturizer would you recommend??
Brief Answer:
Hi
Detailed Answer:
like XXXXXXX and XXXXXXX Baby moisturising lotion .
Also, avoid hot water for showers as much as possible. Hot water and strong soaps worsen dry skin. Use just XXXXXXX warm water and a mild soap like Dove
A more intense misturiser is available in my country. VENUSIA XXXXXXX But i am not sure if that is available in USA
