What Causes Bleeding During At 5 Weeks Of Pregnancy?
Question: Hi, what causes light bleeding at 5 weeks of pregnancy?
Brief Answer:
Precautions advised
Detailed Answer:
Hello dear thanks for trusting health care magic.
Usually bleeding at 5 weeks is an implantation bleeding and thus stops by itself.
But still should not be taken lightly.
Take full bed rest for at least 2 days, avoid having sexual contact with your partner and take good sleep.
Start tablet duphaston 10 mg thrice a day for one week and then twice a week for 4 weeks.
In case cramping occurs or there is any excessive discharge or bleeding per vaginum then visit your gynecologist for examination at the earliest.
Get an ultrasound after 2 Weeks to see for cardiac activity in baby.
Take care.

Hi,
Thank you for your response. I have a few more questions that I hope you can assist me with:
1. When does implantation begin and ends?
2. For how long should the light bleeding continue? The colour is light brown not
bright red or dark brown and it is not like a steady flow. More like a stain.
3. I was on FeSO4 and Folic Acid for two weeks (ended today). Would I still
need to take the tablet you suggested?
4. What kind of medication is the duphaston tablet?
5. I lifted something a little heavy about 1 week ago, then I felt a slight
straining pain in my lower abdomen. The next day is when I started to see
the light blood stains (which has continued to present). Would that have
resulted in the onset of the light bleeding?
Thank you in advance.

Brief Answer:
Take duphaston as advised
Detailed Answer:
Implantation begins after 6 days of ovulation and ends in about 10-12 days.
Light bleeding can continue for 3-4 days.
Folic acid will continue till the end of pregnancy and that is a multivitamin but duphaston is a progesterone, it will help in maintaining and supporting the pregnancy.
Yes it can be related to the heavy weight lift but not necessarily as it can be just an incidental finding.
Take duphaston and good rest as much as possible.
I wish you the best of health.
Take care.

Hi Dr. XXXXXXX XXXXXXX
Thank you for your response again. One more question, does this seem like the events of a miscarriage? If yes, what should I expect to happen?
Thank you in advance.

Brief Answer:
Can be due to abortion
Detailed Answer:
Yes it can be an abortion but abortion is usually preceded by severe pain followed by bleeding which is usually mild at first and then increases.
In either case whether it is an implantation bleeding or impending abortion, management is same viz duphaston and rest so don't be anxious and hope for the best.
In case you have any questions in future you can contact me directly on http://bit.ly/drmanishajain
