Brief Answer:
When the alignment of the eyeballs gets disturbed, one may see double

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.
I have gone carefully through the details provided by you but I would require some more information to be able to make out what exactly has happened. Could you please upload the prescription wherein I can find the medical notes? The facility on the upper right of this page will enable you to upload the document.
As such, if bleeding occurs behind one of the eyes, the alignment of the eyeballs may get disturbed. If the alignment is not proper, the overlaying of the images from each of the eyes would not be proper and one would see double. Initially the eye muscles may readjust for the difference and help in not seeing double but if these muscles get fatigued, the compensation is lost and he would be seeing double. That is exactly what seems to have happened in the case of your husband.
I would suggest you to get in touch in your ophthalmologist and see if any interventions are required.
Regards
