What Causes Bleeding From Nose While Coughing?
Question: I inhaled some particulate carbon at work, which typically results in some short lived respiratory distress 2-3 days later which lasts a day or two at most. After this last time though it has been a week and there are some other troubling things happening. Mostly now when I cough too hard I have a pretty heavy nose bleed. I say nose bleed but I think it is actually up higher in my sinus because it will drain from both nostrils and into my lungs. I was concerned that there was bleeding in my lungs but I have ruled that out because on days I don't get nose bleeds I don't have blood in my sputum. My mucus discharged from my nose is bright yellow/green, which I think means infection and my sputum in more green than yellow, and runs to brown on the days when I have nose bleeds which I think is just oxidized iron from the blood...anyhow is an upper respiratory infection in and of itself reason to go see a physician? How troubling or compounding is the sinus bleeding? I have never gone to a doctor, but I will admit I am slightly concerned.

Routine nasal, throat, food pipe examination with endoscopy, nasal swabs and blood tests for hemoglobin count (to check the severity of the bleeding), a coagulogram (bleeding and clotting factors) tests are recommended. A plain Sinus CT will reveal the health of the sinuses. A general examination including blood pressure recordings is advisable.
4. Three is also the question of continues exposure at work. A Chaest X-ray and Lung Function Tests should be done.
5. A brown color to blood stains may signify regurgitation of swallowed blood as stomach acid denatures the blood. The nose has so much blood supply that it can bleed like a tap, hence a small, intermittent amount if bleed is not worrisome.
