Question: My husband has recently been told by his Dr that he has Lyme disease, He hasn't had any symptoms other than the bullseye rash. Now yesterday he suddenly got a blister the back of his left hand, it has been getting bigger and bigger. What is it and should we pop it. There's no redness and the fluid inside it is very clear.

Brief Answer:
See Dr, do not pop yet

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thanks for the query,

It might be of interest to get this blister seen by a doctor if possible. It is important to check if other symptoms and signs like pain, itches and redness are also experienced by your husband. In case these signs and symptoms are present, and the blister is rapidly increasing in size, this could be an acute inflammatory reaction and require a faster and appropriate attention.

The blister might really have nothing to do with lyme disease, or a tick bite, in case he has not been exposed to ticks lately.

In case of pain, redness, apparition of other blisters elsewhere, malaise, fever , this require management with systemic injectable drugs to stop the inflammatory process. Steroids and non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs would be appropriate in this case.

If not, there really should be no need to panic. The fact that the blister is getting bigger and bigger in opinion required that you meet your primary physician. Popping it and taking no actions would not be very beneficial, for its important to appreciate and understand why the blister is increasing in size. Stopping the increase in size with specific medication, based on physical findings would be helpful.

I would suggest you meet a dr at the Emergency room. If impossible for now, I would not advise popping. In case of pain, Acetaminnophen would be sufficient as you await to see the doctor. In case fever, malaise, redness, pain, itches, rapid increase in size or other new blisters should warrant an urgent medical review.

For now , you manage the pain if present, and observe the blister as you await to see your primary care doctor. Popping the blister is not a perfect idea in my opinion, for its appearance and other characteristics would give a good orientation to your treating doctor.

Kind regards
