Posted on Tue, 15 Jul 2014
Question: i flew back from hawaii on sunday with the flu. Most of the symptoms have passed now, however i still have a block right ear and swollen gland on the right side. Will this go away on its own or should i go to immediate care. I am one of few people today, who prefer to get well on my own without rushing to the doctor.

As below:

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for your query.

1. These symptoms should recover on their own, however this may take several days.

2. To help heal the ear faster, take an anti-allergic mucolytic and regular steam inhalation.

3. Keep a track of the swollen lymph node. If it fails to heal in a couple of weeks, get it examined by a specialist. The same holds true for the ear. Impedance Audiometry is a simple test that helps check for fluid or negative pressures in the middle ear. If the test and hearing is normal, no active management is needed.

I hope that I have answered your queries. If you have any further questions, I will be available to answer them.

Regards.
