What Causes Blood In Stool?
Question: i'm a 36 year old man that has had mild ulcerative colitis for 18 years. Last year i had my routine colonoscopy and my gastro said everything looked great with one benign polyp that was easily removed. 2 months ago i started getting diaherra with "streaks" of blood in my stool. I thought is was a flare up, but usually a flare up has a lot of blood and once corticosteroids are prescribed everything goes back to normal. i've been on corticosteroids for a month now, but i still have occassional diaherra and some days i see streaks of blood in the stool and some days there's no blood. Just very weird.
Brief Answer:
Need further investigations...
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
I am sorry for the situation you are in.
At this point, further investigations are needed to determine whether we are dealing with flare up or other problems:
- complete blood count (to look for leukocytes levels)
- CRP level
- schedule another colonoscopy
- examination of stool for ova/parasites
- culture of feces
Your symptoms (occasional diarrhea with occasional streaks of blood) are not specific for colitis flare ups. However, investigations are needed to determine the last diagnosis.
Hope it helped!
