What Causes Blood In Stool?

default
Posted on Mon, 21 Sep 2015
Question: Hi
I am 47 year old female, 5ft and 8.5 stone. Over last year I have had light bright red blood when passing stool, sometimes quite a lot. Now have difficuly going to toilet, must be constipated, but do not feel any pain from it. When I do go, it is runnyish and infrequent. Passing a lot of gas, and last 3 4 times when tried to go to toilet a transparent like glob was passed. Does not hurt and have no itching. Sometimes, however, i have a very slight sicky feeling in my stomach. When I did go to doctors about year ago when first happened was told, just a tear int eh anus and nothing to worry about just eat foods to ease constipation. He did not carry out an examination. Year later, stressed about it but told no one. Should I be worried?

Brief Answer:
Colonoscopy has to be done.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Thank you for the query.

Your symptoms are most likely caused by hemorrhoids. Especially if the blood is on stool surface (not mixed with it). Hemorrhoids are very often caused by constipation. Transparent glob is most likely a mucus.
As you are almost 50, there is a good time to have colonoscopy done. It is necessary to make sure that there is nothing more than hemorrhoids. Similar symptoms can be caused by a polyp or even colon cancer (however the risk of it is very low).

Please consult your doctor and have colonoscopy done. In a meanwhile please start probiotic intake and increase fiber rich products.

Hope this will help. Feel free to ask further questions.
Regards.
