What Causes Blood In Stool?

default
Posted on Tue, 17 Nov 2015
Question: I had passes a bloody stool a couple of days ago and a bit concerned, the stool itself had some blood in it and when I wiped there was a mucussy blood on the toilet paper. I had some episodes in the past when I lost my appetite and was only passing mucus, I went to the Dr. last year and had some test done and got second opinions. I had two occult tests done by two different Dr's and all came back normal, I had a full abdominal X-ray and a lung X-ray and blood tests done and all was normal. 2 days ago I had the episode with blood in the stool and since then my stools have been back to normal with no trace of blood. My question is can this be cancer? wouldn't the abdominal X-rays have shown some kind of mass? and I heard colon cancer was slow growing. So basically my Doctor, wasn't very concerned, why order an X-ray, blood tests, occult blood tests, etc? Would colon cancer possibly show presence with one of these tests? He did however diagnose me with IBS, when I look up mu symptoms on the internet cancer always seems to be one of the causes. I dont have medical insurance at the time so going to the Dr, isnt very cheap, this is why I am trying to rule out possible causes, maybe I need to relax. I added a picture of the stool, it was redder like a blood bit lools different on picture, tell me what you think? I don’t want to get caught off guard and have cancer, does this look like possible hemorrhoids or a fissure? And if it is cancer would this be considred stage 4?

Brief Answer:
unlikely to be cancer

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for your query.

The common explanation for your problems would be hemorrhoids or anal fissure. We don't think of cancer first. You should get a rectal examination by a doctor, which would confirm if something of this sort is there.

If still in doubt, get a colonoscopy. That would rule out colon or rectal cancer, polyps, etc. Xrays are not useful for these problems.

Overall, I don't think it would turn out to be cancer. The above tests are not very expensive also.

Hope this helps to relax you. I will be available for follow up.

Im just a bit nervous because this was my first encounter. My wife found a cut on my anus but it didnt seem bloody at all, the reason I was so concerned was because of my 2 weeks of no appetite last year and stools that only contained mucus, this episode happened twice that is why i had two seperate occult tests done months apart and of course the X'ray. I attached some pictures of my stool from a couple of days ago, its seems pinkish but was really red, my camera isnt the best quality, you be the judge and tell me what you think, your an oncologist so Im assuming you know what a cancerous stool looks like. i also feel inside of my anus up going towards my rectum an itching burning sensation but its to high for me to treat with ointment. Please look at pic tell me what you honestly think.

Brief Answer:
looks like fissure

Detailed Answer:
As there is a cut inside anus with itching sensation, it is most likely a fissure.

I'm afraid there is no such thing as cancerous stool. So just by visual inspection of stool I won't be able to rule out cancer. But digital rectal examination by doctor can certainly reveal a lot.
