Hello and welcome,

As I'm sure you realize, this needs to be checked out if you haven't had a recent colonoscopy. But it may not be anything serious.

Possibilities include a rectal tear or fissure (a tear in the lining of the rectum) which can come about from passing a large or hard BM. Hemorrhoids, both internal and external can bleed too. Usually, if it is from hemorrhoid irritation, you would see blood on the toilet paper when you wipe, and feel some discomfort in the area.

Bleeding can come from a polyp in the colon too, and for that reason, it's important to see your doctor unless you had a clean colonoscopy result recently.

Other possibilities include an autoimmune disorder of the gastrointestinal tract, but that would be less likely because of your age and because you haven't mentioned other problems such as fevers or fluish type symptoms.

And bleeding from the stomach can cause blood in the stool or toilet too, but it would have to be a brisk bleed (otherwise the stomach acid makes it look black and tarry). Again, I think this is unlikely as you haven't mentioned bad stomach pain.

So, while it could be less concerning things such as a rectal tear/fissure or hemorrhoid, I think you should go in to be checked.
