Posted on Tue, 20 Oct 2015
Question: After my husband had a CT Scan with contrast, he passed what looked like a blood clot while he was urinating. Could the use of the contrast cause this problem? This question could probably be best answered by a urologist.

Brief Answer:
Hematuria is most likely not related to contrast side effects.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
I am a radiologist and we commonly tackle contrast side effects.

Passage of blood clots during urination(hematuria)is most likely not related to contrast side effects.
It may be due to some other reasons like UTI,calculus in urogenital tract, mass etc.
Contrast during CT scan is administrated only after knowing baseline creatinine level.Renal side effect(Nphropathy) is 25% rise in serum creatinine level within 48-72 hours of contrast administration.
However, your husband need proper clinical examination and investigation.Renal function test is most important and it includes serum creatinine and urea level.
GFR estimation etc may be needed after evaluation.
Urine RE/ME should also be done.

He should drink lot of water. He may need evaluation by a nephrologist.

Get well soon.
Hope I have answered your question.
Further queries are most welcome.
