What Causes Blood In Urine While On Xarelto?

default
Posted on Tue, 13 Oct 2015
Question: My husband has blood clots in both legs and his lungs. His Primary put him on Xeralto for this. But he has been having blood in his urine for almost a year now.. we have been to a urologist, a kidney specialist, and a hematologist. They all say nothing is wrong. This morning he informed me that he is now also having blood in his stool. ( Sometimes its not noticeable, other times it looks like nothing but blood, in both.) What do I do? I know this isn't right, and that something has to be really wrong. I am extremely worried, please give me some suggestions!!!! Thank you, XXXXX

Brief Answer:
it's probably due to xarelto

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

xarelto's most common side effect is bleeding and anemia. If the urologist and gastroenterologist have found no specific causes of bleeding then the most likely cause is xarelto. Measuring factor Xa activity may help in determining whether the current dosage is too high or not. When bleeding complications occur, perhaps considering a change in the antithrombotic treatment would sound reasonable. A falling hematocrit would be one more reason to do so.

Please note that if your husband has severe renal disease or liver disease then xarelto may cause more bleeding than usual.

I hope you find my comments helpful!
