default
Posted on Sat, 26 Nov 2016
Question: Ive always had terrible anxiety. Thinking thenworsenin every situation throws me into a frenzy. I sometimes get blurred vision, and then a migraine. Doesnt happen often, but when it does it terrifies me. My anxiety kicks in and i start worrying about brain cancer. Thats the beast of having such a worrisome mind. The headache goes away after rest and the vision goes back to normal within 15mins. Doesnt happen often, but its happened more than once. My panic attacks make me feel like theres this impending doom. I get short of breath, slightly light headed, and just very uneasy because im so scared something bad is wrong with me. Suggestions for coping with this and ease my mind?

Hello, and thanks for your question.

Headache, blurred vision, migraine, shortness of breath, lightheadedness -- all of these are typical and normal somatic symptoms of anxiety and panic attacks. None of these symptoms are suggestive of any serious problem such as cancer. Instead, they are consistent with anxiety. I suggest seeking treatment for anxiety, using an SSRI antidepressant such as Lexapro, and/or psychotherapy with a therapist, cognitive behavior therapy preferred if possible.

I have a dr appointment on the 15th. Going to the dr alone is something i try to avoid because i feel the worst will be found out. I cannot convince myself otherwise and thats extremely frustrating. What can i expect? Will i be able to explain how i feel and then get prescribed something? I dont want to start taking something ill grow dependent on. One fear after another... this is the most awful way to live. :(

Detailed Answer:
An SSRI antidepressant such as Lexapro or Zoloft are not habit-forming and are very effective treatments for anxiety. I would ask your doctor about starting one of these to treat anxiety.
