What Causes Blurred Vision With Pain In The Head?
Question: I am a 66 yo AAF. A few days ago, I began to experience an ache on the lower part of my head behind my right ear. The ache tends to move up the right side of my head when I turn to the left and cause pain in the right frontal lobe. I have checked my self for stroke symptoms but that doesn't seem to be the cause. What other kinds of illness might begin with this type of discomfort?
Brief Answer:
Need more information
Detailed Answer:
Hi Jxxxxxx, thanks for asking from HCM.
I can understand your concern. Your headache is different from routine headache and you are also having myleoplastic syndrome. I need more information to make some differential diagnosis
- Do you have any eye symptoms like blurring of vision, eye pain, photophobia?
- Is there any history of vomiting?
- Is there any local tenderness behind ear? Over mastoid region
- Do you have any history of sinusitis or nasal blockade?
This much information I need to reach at some conclusion. Hope you will provide me these answers.
Thanks. Take care.

Brief Answer:
Most probable cause of pain
Detailed Answer:
Hi xxxxxxxxxxx, welcome back.
As you are having sinusitis and myeloplastic syndrome, two possibilities are there.
First is
- Sinusitis - Right frontal and ethmoidal/sphenoidal sinusitis - It can cause similar kind of pain. It can be confirmed by CT or MRI brain and sinuses.
For treatment, you can consult ENT specialist and follow few tips
: Avoid cold food and water
: Inhale steam 4-6 times daily
: Drink hot or warm coffee/milk/tea
: You can take combination of tablet Cetrizine, Xylometazoline and Paracetamol after proper prescription.
: You can take antibiotic therapy like Coamoxyclav after proper prescription.
: Second possibility is myeloplastic lesion in right mastoid bone - It can be confirmed by NCCT of temporal bone and looking for any evidence of bone lysis.
Its treatment is same as that of myeloplastic syndrome. For relief of pain, you can take tablet Acetaminophen or paracetamol after proper prescription.
Hope it will help you. If still in doubt or any pain, do let me know.
Thanks. Take care.

Can you give the answer in less technical, medical terms? I do have an ENT, & will reach out on Monday. Using a hot compress on the right side of my head has brought some relief. It sounds though that I should reach out to the hematologist about the myleoplastic possibility. but thanks for the assessment.

Explanation in simple language
Detailed Answer:
Hi xxxxxx, welcome back.
Sorry for my medical language, I will explain you in simple language. The sinus are those empty spaces in your facial bones. Infection can occur in these spaces.
This can cause infected fluid and swelling in sinus and this leads to pain and heaviness.
As your headache is on right side, right side air sinus infection can cause headache.
Now coming to myelplastic syndrome, it can cause swelling in bone. This swelling is due to fast growth of tissue. This can cause bone pain and thus headache.
I think it will give you some insight. If still any doubt, do let me know.
Thanks. Take care.
