What Causes Body Chills And Fever In The Morning?

default
Posted on Tue, 13 May 2014
Question: For the past several years, I have several times a year, woke up with severe chills( around 3 am) which change into fever around 100-102 , then malaise l Total time lapse around 6 hours, I've had it again today and am just since 10 am feeling better although weak. I am 79 and have pretty good health overall...but this keeps recurring periodically. I did suffer a bug sting in 2008 (unidentified) which later wound came to a head and we lanced it. I would go to urgent care but I feel so lousy when sick, I don't have the energy to drive. Thanks for your consideration. XXXX

Brief Answer: Could you tell me more about these chills? Detailed Answer: Hi and thank you so much for this query. I am so sorry to hear about this chills. I hope we get to pinpoint the cause and offer real solutions that would be long lasting. 1. I will like to know ho often you get these chills when they do occur? this is to say do they occur within a sort period during the year or they occur once in a while all year round?. 2. For the past years, have you had any diagnosis when you go to the hospital with this condition that can explain why you are having these symptoms? I understand that you have positive Mantoux test. However, these symptoms of having fever once in a while would not really be suggestive of tuberculosis. Other symptoms like weight loss, lack of appetite, body weakness, etc are all lacking to make this more suggestive. The brevity of the febrile episodes are not also very suggestive of an active infectious process. Let me hear fro you when you return from the hospital. I will like to know what your doctors found on physical examination and any preliminary investigation results. Waiting to hear from you. I wish you well and thanks for using our services. Chills become violent but not malaria. Months apart. A few times a year not related to weather. Good appetite, no weight loss. Have not been to hospital...episodes don't last long enough 6-8 hours. Thanks for your reply. XXXX

Brief Answer: Not caused by an infection Detailed Answer: Hi and thanks for this follow up information. There is just no infectious process that can explain these symptoms. I have a strong feeling that these findings can only be explained by chemically active substances in the body that get to undergo some massive fluctuations in levels resulting in these symptoms. Hormones may be the likely cause of these. I will suggest that you get blood samples collected during similar episodes for extensive laboratory testing paying great attention to hormone levels. I will also encourage that you get an endocrinologist consult for this. I hope this helps. feel free to ask for more clarification should need be. Thanks. Dr. Ditah, MD.
