What Causes Body Chills And Nausea Along With Fever?

Posted on Fri, 21 Nov 2014
Question: Hi. Went to ER Wednesday night due to sudden chills that wouldnt stop, little nausea, mild pain between shoulder blades. Fever 100. They ran CBC, all good, chest xray normal, but liver AST was 189 and ALT 83. ER doc said probably just a virus. No RX no follow-up. Had physical exam three weeks ago and liver enzymes were all normal. Should i be concerned about the hospital results or not worry if the ER doc disnt say get a follow-up? I am also a recovering alchoholic, no drinking at all aonce July 25th, not a drug user but do take motrin upon occasion and took 2 the day i went to the ER. Im freaking that this may mean cancer?

Brief Answer:
Review LFT , ultrasonography.

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
The chills, nausea, pain and fever you have noted can be due to viral infection, the raised AST and ALT with other normal investigations is suggestive that it might have been due to viral hepatitis.

It is good that you had Physical exam and liver enzymes were normal 3 weeks back, you have stopped drinking, and take Motrin occasionally.

In spite of worrying about the old reports, the best way would be to have review Liver Function Tests, ultrasonography of the whole abdomen and Hepatico-biliary and liver.

If the liver functions are reduced or get to the normal levels, nothing to worry about. Cancer patients never get such symptoms, yet you can get this confirmed from a Gynecologist /Gastroenterologist preferably.

CT scan and Endoscopies will help to rule out a diagnosis of cancer.

I hope this answer helps you .

Thank you. What do you mean cancer patients never get such symptoms? Do you mean the chills, fever, and pain or the raised levels?

Brief Answer:
Rare presentation of cancer as acute problems.

Detailed Answer:
The cancer patient's course is usually insidious. By the time they get such symptoms, other parameters like Alkaline phoshstase, Bilirubin will be highly raised. As also the patient has other symptoms of loss of appetite, loss of weight, Pain, white stools and many more to suggest that there is something serious underneath that needs to be investigated.

Caner resenting with acute symptoms without any other warning symptoms or signs is a bit rare and you have not mentioned anything like these, and I never wanted to scare you. Further investigations will help to prove or disprove a particular problem- this is called 'to rule out'.

So please get all the relevant physical examinations and investigations once you have a doubt.
