What Causes Bowel Movement Soon After Having Meal?
Question: Our daughter is 1 year and 1 month. We have noticed that often she has motion soon after she finishes her meal (in about 10-15 mins time). Of course just once. Is that something we need to take some action? As always, thanks very much in advance for all your help.

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for writing to us.
You should give her clean drinking water or ORS after each motion.
I need more details from you to be better able to narrow the diagnosis:
- since when have you noticed these symptoms?
- Does she have any other symptoms?
- What have you tried?
- Tell me about her diet as well. How much solid food and milk does she take?
Waiting for your response

Brief Answer:
Milk is a laxative
Detailed Answer:
Hi again
Milk is a laxative. If the baby is given only milk, she will pass stools quite often. Juice and sugary foods are also laxative. Curd is good. By one year of age, the baby's food should resemble the adult food in the family. Thus increase the solid food content - atleast 4 - 5 times a day. She should also be given clean water to drink. Water is the commonest source of gastrointestinal infections. Can also try pomegranate seeds (if she can take).
That said, try the solid foods and clean water for 4-5 days. If she does not get better, then you need to consult a pediatrician. Though antibiotics are not needed in this case, a diagnosis would be needed.
