What Causes Brown Vaginal Spotting During Periods?

default
Posted on Mon, 26 May 2014
Question: Hello, I am hoping you can tell me what could be going on with my body. Three weeks ago, instead of my period I had some light spotting, a brown color, that only showed up on toilet paper. It only lasted three days. After that I have been nauseous and have stomach pains and did have some cramping for a week. Yesterday I started spotting again when my boyfriend and I had intercourse, a light pink, and am sore. What can be happening?I don't have ovarian cysts, I already had that checked awhile back, and I don't have polyps. That was checked a month before. But I haven't had a period since December 26, 2013. So I don't know how I could be pregnant.

Brief Answer:
Can be due to pregnancy.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for trusting us with your health concern.
The irregular spotting that you have with an overdue period can be due to -
1) Pregnancy- At first, you need to undergo one blood test for beta-hCG (most reliable) to rule out LATE CONCEPTION as you have missed periods for four months.

2) Delayed period with spotting may be due to hormonal imbalance, Poly Cystic Ovary, mental stress, emotional upset, irregular diet habit, high prolactin level, over weight or extreme loss, pelvic infection, thyroid disturbance etc.

In that case, one pelvic ultrasound scan and complete hormone test (like LH/ FSH, Estrogen, serum Prolactin, Thyroid, DHEAS etc) will be worthwhile to rule out the underlying cause and confirm the diagnosis. You must consult with your local GYNECOLOGIST for the blood tests.

3) Proper treatment depends on diagnosis of the case. Here, you may require combined hormonal pill & other drug therapy to induce and regularize your period. Kindly, procure a complete prescription from your doctor.

4) In addition, do take a healthy diet (LOW CARBOHYDRATE) with more green vegetables, drink more water, keep bowel habit regular, avoid mental stress by meditation or yoga, control body weight by regular physical exercise and maintain genital hygiene properly.

I have been tested a month ago for cysts and any abnormalities, but my Gynecologist reported that everything is great. I am not stressed, and my diet hasn't changed. Only these last three weeks since the first bit of spotting have I had any nausea and cramping. I have been told by doctors that even when I miss my period I can still ovulate and conceive. But I didn't believe it until I was asked by my boyfriend about my appetite, which has increased, and bathroom trips. I just started taking birth control to get my period back, but I'm allergic to latex so my boyfriend pulls out. But I was recently told that that doesn't always work, which made me concerned. Which leads me to another question. Could the spotting I got during intercourse be Postcoital bleeding?

Brief Answer:
Yes.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
If there was no withdrawal bleeding after stopping the birth control pills for a week- the pill free period then pregnancy needs to be ruled out. Pull out method is not a sure way of avoiding pregnancy as precum also contains sperms.
The bleeding you have could be a post coital bleeding ; implantation bleeding; vaginal infection or due to an impending period.
Regards.
