Brief Answer:
mostly due to viral infection.
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Welcome again and thanks for sharing more information.
Mostly, brownish mucus is likely due to viral infection (EB virus, adenovirus) but in some cases it might also be related to bacterial infection (like streptococcal pharyngitis).
We differentiate the cause through routine blood counts with throat examination, pharyngoscopy to rule out infective causes whether it is viral or bacterial.
Therefore it is advisable to see the doctor,Preferably ENT specialist for complete medical history including history of sensitivity to antibiotics and thoroughly clinical examination of throat.
Viral throat infection usually do not require any antibiotics. They get relieved with symptomatic medications only.
You should take humidifier along with steam inhalation 3 to 4 times daily which can help cough by loosening secretions from the throat.
Take over the counter pain killers and anti-pyretic like paracetamol 500 in combination with ibuprofen 400 from symptomatic relief of abdominal pain and body pain.
Tablet Mucinex-Dm (available OTC) twice daily which contains Dextromethorphan and Guaifenesin which is an expectorant and helps to loosen congestion in your throat and making it easier to cough out mucus/phlegm.
Take plenty of fluids with warm water or tea and better to avoid cold water/drinks.
If there is not much improvement within 2 to 3 days with these symptomatic treatment then Z-pack antibiotic can be given, but only after consulting to your doctor and undergoing routine blood investigations.
Your doctor may also prescribe you anti-anxiety medication (like alprazolam 0.5mg) for adequate sleep in night.
Hope this helps and let me know if you have more questions.
